Bjarke Ingels Unveils Visionary Gelephu International Airport in Bhutan’s ‘Mindfulness City’

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has revealed plans for the Gelephu International Airport, a striking new gateway to Bhutan’s ambitious “Mindfulness City.” Designed as a harmonious blend of nature and architecture, the airport will serve as a crucial hub for the region’s sustainable urban expansion.

A Gateway to Mindfulness

Gelephu, envisioned as a city built around well-being and sustainability, aims to attract global visitors seeking a balance between modern innovation and spiritual grounding. The airport, a key element in this development, is designed to reflect Bhutan’s deep cultural and environmental values while offering a world-class travel experience.

Sustainable and Culturally Rooted Design

Ingels' firm, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), is known for its cutting-edge, eco-conscious architecture. The airport will incorporate local materials, renewable energy, and passive cooling systems, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Inspired by Bhutanese architecture, the design features traditional motifs, natural wood structures, and open-air spaces that seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape.

Transforming Bhutan’s Connectivity

Currently, Bhutan’s only international airport is in Paro, a location known for its challenging mountainous terrain. The new Gelephu International Airport is set to expand the country’s accessibility, opening doors to new tourism and business opportunities while aligning with Bhutan’s unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

With BIG’s expertise and Bhutan’s commitment to mindful development, this project marks a significant step toward a future where architecture and nature coexist in perfect balance.
