Bertone Revives the Iconic 1969 Runabout with a Modern Twist and Pop-Up Headlights

Bertone has unveiled a modern reinterpretation of its iconic 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept car, seamlessly blending retro aesthetics with contemporary performance. The original Runabout, designed by Marcello Gandini, debuted at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, showcasing a wedge-shaped, boat-inspired design that influenced future models like the Fiat X1/9.carstyling.ru+18carscoops.com+18story-cars.com+18thetimes.co.uk+11story-cars.com+11thedrive.com+11

Design and Features

The new Bertone Runabout retains signature elements from the original, such as the distinctive wedge shape and L-shaped side profile extending from the roll bar to the front. One of the standout features is the integration of pop-up headlights—a concept from the 1969 model—now realized in the production version. These headlights emerge from the hood when activated and retract seamlessly, preserving the vehicle's sleek lines.

Additional design updates include a truncated tail with round taillights, an industrial-inspired engine cover, and an aluminum fuel cap. An aerodynamic S-duct is incorporated into the front design to enhance airflow and cooling. The car will be available in three colors: antique copper, azure blue reminiscent of Mediterranean waters, and pearlescent ivory echoing Italian marble. story-cars.com

Performance and Specifications

Under the hood, the modern Runabout is equipped with a mid-mounted V6 engine delivering 460 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual close-ratio gearbox. Two configurations are offered: the Barchetta, featuring a fully open design with a minimal windshield, and the Targa, which includes a full windshield and removable roof.

Production and Availability

Production of the new Bertone Runabout is scheduled to commence in mid-2026, with a limited run of only 25 units. Pricing is expected to start at €350,000 (approximately £290,000, excluding VAT).autocar.co.uk

This revival not only pays homage to Bertone's rich design heritage but also introduces a neo-retro masterpiece that appeals to both classic car enthusiasts and modern supercar aficionados.bertone.it+1smart-motoring.com+1
