Montreal-based design studio NatureHumaine has collaborated with a young couple to create "Selenite," a serene woodland retreat nestled in Quebec's forests. This cabin is meticulously crafted to serve as the ultimate sanctuary for relaxation and well-being.
The project draws inspiration from its namesake, selenite—a crystalline mineral also known as "moonstone," revered for its calming properties. This influence is evident in both the cabin's form and function. The structure presents as a monochromatic white cube, with sloping roofs that emulate the crystal's natural geometry. Strategically placed skylights invite abundant natural light, fostering a tranquil and airy ambiance.
A paramount aspect of the design is its commitment to universal accessibility. The clients emphasized creating a space that accommodates all visitors, including those with reduced mobility. To this end, every detail—from spatial clearances to furniture selection—has been thoughtfully considered to ensure safety and comfort for everyone.
Enhancing the retreat's focus on wellness, the cabin features a comprehensive hydrotherapeutic circuit. Guests can indulge in amenities such as a steam bath, sauna, spa, cold bath, and a salt room. Additionally, a sophisticated home automation system synchronizes lighting with circadian rhythms and facilitates guided meditation sessions in any room, promoting holistic relaxation.
Sustainability and health are integral to the project's ethos. The cabin utilizes hemp wool insulation for thermal efficiency and incorporates a Faraday cage to shield against electromagnetic waves, catering to individuals with electro-sensitivity. Interior finishes are free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and locally sourced wood is used for cabinetry, reflecting a commitment to ecological responsibility.
Externally, the cabin's minimalist design is characterized by white-painted wooden planks and a matching metal roof, harmonizing with the surrounding forest landscape. All mechanical elements are discreetly painted white to maintain the cohesive aesthetic, ensuring that the structure integrates seamlessly with its natural
environment.
In essence, NatureHumaine's "Selenite" cabin exemplifies a harmonious blend of ecological architecture, wellness, and inclusive design, offering a rejuvenating retreat that resonates with the tranquil beauty of its natural surroundings.
